Boat race: China’s naval buildup

Observers predict that this Sunday, on the navy’s 68th anniversary, the western Pacific will have another aircraft carrier cruising its waters. For several months it has been clear that China’s second carrier, probably to be named the Shandong, is primed for launch. It will be the country’s first to be built at home. Some experts are sceptical as to its technical capabilities, with one calling it “purely a copycat” of the first, a Soviet ship bought from Ukraine in 1998. Still, the naval build-up, with reports of a third carrier being built, is making the neighbours nervous. Taiwan’s president is rebuilding an indigenous arms industry and Japan’s prime minister has been stretching the country’s pacifist constitution so that it can co-operate more easily with allies. Countries ranging from India to Australia are buying up submarines in a bid to check China’s growing naval might. Concerns of a naval arms race in the Pacific are growing.
